José is the brother of a well-known businessman who owns multiple businesses in Charlotte. He arrived for a visit from Florida and decided to do some shopping at Home Depot on Sunday, November 16. He never imagined he would be detained by Border Patrol agents, even though he is a legal resident and presented his driver’s license to the officers. Before they handcuffed him, he managed to call his sister-in-law, who is an attorney. She arrived at the scene and, after arguing with the agents, succeeded in getting him released. Why was Juan detained? Did he have an arrest warrant or a pending immigration case? No. They detained him because he is Latino.
Juan (whose name we changed for safety reasons) narrowly avoided being taken to a detention center thanks to the intervention of an attorney on site. Many others were not so lucky. More than 200 people were arrested in Charlotte during the first three days of the largest and most aggressive immigration operation in North Carolina’s history.
On the morning of Saturday, November 15, heavily armed officers with covered faces began the hunt through the streets of Charlotte. They claimed they would target dangerous criminals, but reality showed a very different picture. Latinos were stopped and questioned without any warrant being shown and without any explanation for why they were being detained. Agents entered businesses and private spaces without proper authorization. Hungry for numbers, they began questioning the legal status of anyone with Latino features, leaving behind a trail of fear and disregard for people’s constitutional rights.
The agents—trained to confront drug traffickers in the desert—drove through Charlotte’s streets in unmarked vehicles to deploy their full tactical expertise against a flower vendor on Central Ave. They pinned a teenager to the ground outside a supermarket and chased gardeners installing Christmas lights. Legal residents and citizens were detained simply for being Latinos. Car windows were smashed, and high-powered weapons were pointed at unarmed individuals. Everything was caught on video. The authoritarian fantasy of certain Republican leaders echoed the darkest chapters of the Latin American dictatorships; many of the arrested immigrants had fled.
Why did the Trump administration deploy nearly 200 Border Patrol agents to Charlotte? The promoters of totalitarianism flocked to the media to perform the most absurd mental gymnastics in an attempt to defend the indefensible. Lacking any legal justification, all they could do was demonize immigrants, lumping them all together as dangerous criminals.
The same agents now marching through the streets of Charlotte and Raleigh were previously in Chicago, where they arrested more than 600 undocumented immigrants. Ninety-seven percent of those detained had no criminal record at the time of their arrest, according to data from the Department of Justice itself.
This is not about safety. It is not about protecting Americans. This is about using vulnerable communities—human lives—as pawns in a cruel political game. President Trump himself admitted that these operations are a form of punishment against states and cities governed by Democrats. Terror as a tool of political coercion. Is this ethical? How will the spiritual, business, and community leaders who supported this respond?
The immigrants of Charlotte and other parts of the state have suffered the worst attack in their recent history. It will take time to rebuild this community. Yet despite this grim panorama, this moment of pain also brings a ray of light thanks to the people who have bravely stood up against this abuse. We are not alone. When the agents return to the border, it will be up to all of us to rise from the ashes of this nightmare and rebuild a welcoming city that still values diversity.
